Cortijo Juarez is both ancient and modern!

The original ancient cortijo is so old, it is recorded as the Juarez cortijo in the catastro records and surveys, and not just as a number, which indicates significant historical relevance.  The cortijo was purchased by the current owners in a ruinous condition, and after patiently waiting for planning permission, they invested time, energy and money in transforming it into a stunning, spectacular home, whilst maintaining the exact original line, size and facade of the original house – a specific requirement in the planning permission.  The owners poured equal love and investment into the land, creating beautiful gardens, terraces and a pool, to frame and complement the beautiful country views and natural surroundings.

The result is a comfortable, luxurious country home on beautiful grounds, in rustic countryside, very private, and totally peaceful – indeed birdsong is practically the only sound!  It is the perfect escape from a busy life, and would work well as a top quality holiday rental villa.

Entrance: With reasonably easy access, a private drive, lined with flowering borders and bushes, leads up the hill past beautiful gardens and the garage area, up to the house and parking area.  By the North East side of the house, where the driveway ends, is a beautiful, original ‘era‘, or threshing circle, probably over 100 years old.  The ‘eras’ were large, flat areas set out in circles, with stone cobble floors, often in patterns, used for threshing the wheat to remove the grain from the husks.  Today, the Cortijo Juarez ‘era’ is used for parking and as a special feature of outstanding beauty.  They are protected by law due to historic interest.

House: The house, (230m2), still preserving its exact, original shape and appearance on the outside, is on two floors, with a large front door leading into a hallway.  The hallway, also where the grand open stairwell to the upper floor is located, leads through to a large, open plan living area.  This consists of a beautiful living/dining room (around 50m2 in total) with a top of the range wood-burner and quality windows and floors throughout.  The beautiful windows in the living room allow the view in, as well as plenty of natural light. The dining room area has hidden store cupboards along the entire end wall, ideal for minimalistic living and hiding things away invisibly.  There are character beams on part of the ceiling.

A second large, top quality solid wood front door leads from the open living area to the front terrace, although it is not often used, as the kitchen, next door, has an entire wall of quality folding doors that allow the kitchen to perfectly integrate the inside with the outside, opening the entire kitchen to the terrace – the perfect, elegant setup for entertaining and enjoying outdoor life to the full.  The kitchen has another particularly special feature – a totally integrated structure, with hidden appliances and a large central island, along with top quality fittings and appliances throughout, making it streamlined, elegant, and yet totally practical.

There are two large double bedrooms downstairs, offering comfort and tranquility on the ground floor, with a beautiful, stylish bathroom serving both bedrooms, between the two, with an extra-large same-level walk-in shower.

There is a central heating room in the ground floor which services the hot and cold under-floor temperature control system throughout the house.

Taking the open stylish staircase to the first floor, a landing area offers access to a beautiful bathroom with same-level walk-in shower. Its tiles and finishing make this a wonderful room to enjoy one’s daily ablutions in total comfort and luxury.  At the end of the landing is a door into the master bedroom (22m2) with two skylight windows directly over the bed from which one has the perfect view of the night sky – what a way to watch the stars!  The windows also have electric, remote control blinds, to block out the light when required.

Off the upstairs landing is a second control cupboard, and opposite, a door into a useful dressing room.  Beyond the dressing room is a loft area on the same level, consisting of a second dressing or storage room, and a huge area with sloping ceiling which can be used for storage or as a playroom or even a children’s special, fun loft-bedroom – ideal for the grandchildren!

The terrace, pool and utility area: There are several fabulous terraces at Cortijo Juarez.  The main terrace, leading off the kitchen, is a huge, open space with an area shaded by pull-out awnings for shaded dining, and tiled with top of the range, pure stone tiles.  Here a suite of outdoor seating is the absolute dream place to contemplate the beautiful views all around, and enjoy peace and nature.  This is a terrace to entertain friends on, and enjoy all year round.

A few steps down to one side of this terrace is the pool, cleverly tucked away out of sight from the terrace.  This is not a house that is dominated by its pool, which is located discretely to one side of the terrace on a slightly lower level – and yet it is magnificent and beautiful!  This extraordinary infinity pool is in a long, oblong shape (42m2) and was built with proper swimming in mind.  It is a truly luxurious and enjoyable experience!  Next to the pool is a quieter, more discrete terrace, making an alternative area to enjoy, and from here is access to the laundry and utility room with a fridge for drinks and a food preparation area with a sink and storage space, and a spacious WC next door.

Garage and workshop:  Just below the main terrace, with access directly from the main driveway, is the large garage with remote control electric garage doors.  There is space for several cars and the garage doubles as a workshop.  There is also an under-floor vehicle inspection area for vehicle maintenance.  To the rear of the garage, a back door makes access from the house, terrace and gardens easy.

Grounds and gardens: Just below the terrace, and in fact around three sides of the house, are beautiful gardens.  The current owners have planted a myriad of flowering plants and shrubs, making stunning gardens, without losing the rustic charm of the natural area in which the estate is located, with lavendar mingling with rosemary, lantana, bourganvillea, roses, bird of paradise,  and many other varieties of sweet smelling, colourful plants.  Little paths lead around the gardens, where one comes across benches to enjoy the views, and raised vegetable beds. There are also original olive and almond trees, an oak tree, a productive fig tree planted by the original farm owners, the Juarez family, 70 years ago, orange, lemon and melia trees.

To the opposite side of the driveway and house is an archery range and pétanque court, with a covered area for shade and storage – bows and arrows, plus a pétanque set included.  Below, the ground slopes downhill, and the slopes contain a thriving vineyard producing delicious grapes in late summer and early autumn.  And at the bottom of the slope is a flat area for plant potting and garden maintenance, accessed along a path at the bottom of the driveway, with compost containers and a recycling area.

Facilities and special features of Cortijo Juarez: apart from the under floor heating and cooling system and the unique infinity pool, the house has solar heated hot water, a 14,000L water deposit under the main terrace and an irrigation system around the estate to automatically water the plants.  All the plants are hardy Mediterranean plants, not requiring a huge amount of water.  In the house, the windows and doors are all double glazed, wood-effect PVC and there are also electric blinds on many windows in the house and of course, mains water and electricity and a septic tank.
