Exclusive to Unspoilt Andalusia

A simply beautiful, original cortijo, bursting with rustic charm and character and updated for modern living, in a stunning country landscape just 7 minutes from the village of Comares, 15 minutes from Colmenar and Riogordo villages, and 45 minutes to Malaga airport.

This wonderful house is the perfect choice for those looking for original, rustic features, combined with good space, privacy – but not isolation – and with a separate self-contained guest ‘casita’.

The mountainous area between the triangle formed by the villages of Comares, Riogordo and Colmenar is dotted with beautiful old cortijos and pretty country houses that, perched on the many hills and peaks, offer wonderful views and total peace, whilst not being too remote.

This lovely area is perfect for outdoor living and those who favour a view over endless mountain peaks as a backdrop, and fabulous mountain air.  La Casa Serena (The Serene House) is a few minutes from Comares village, which is itself around 35 minutes from the coast at Torre del Mar, and within one hour of Malaga.

The Grounds and Guest Casita

A gated entrance leads onto a tree-lined gravel drive of around 80 metres, leading to an ample car parking area.  In this area is the comfortable guest casita, which consists of a fully fitted kitchen (3 x 2.25m), leading through an archway to the bedroom (5 x 3m) and a bathroom beyond (2.5 x 1.5m). To the rear of the casita is a small, private terrace with steps leading down to a level garden area with a variety of fruit trees and a grapevine. This is ideal for use as a small holiday let, or to accommodate friends and family.

An arch by the side of the main house, to the rear of the parking area, leads to the main garden and pool, facing due South. The pool is 29m2 plus walk-in steps.  This lovely area is totally private and ideal for all types of outdoor living, eating and entertaining.  From here we can appreciate the beauty of this ancient building which is as beautiful on the outside as it is inside.  From the poolside, the view over the distant mountain ranges is impressive, an ever-constant reminder of the dramatic landscape that makes up this part of Andalusia.

A path from the pool terrace leads up to a grassy area ideal for recreational activities or for creating a garden, vegetable patch or fruit tree orchard.  From this area thee are lovely views over the house, gardens and countryside beyond.

The House

A delightful covered terrace area facing South (5 x 2m) is the perfect shaded outside living and dining room for most of the year, overlooking the pool terrace.  From here, magnificent double wooden doors lead into the hallway (4 x 2.5m), already full of charm, and the double doors straight ahead offer an enticing peak of what is to come in the rest of the house.  To the right of the hall is a door to the delightful bathroom (a generous 3.75 x 2m) with spacious walk-in shower.

Ahead, through the double doors from the hallway, we find ourselves in the magnificent living area, consisting of a living room (7 x 3m) with door leading to the rear terrace, and the dining room beyond (3 x 3m), which itself leads into the fully fitted, rustic style kitchen (3.5 x 3m).  This wonderful space has beams, rustic floor tiles and wooden windows, thick stone walls and interesting alcoves, a true example of an original rustic cortijo.  An attractive woodburner heats the space very efficiently in the Winter.

Double doors from the living room lead into a second hallway, with beautiful reproduction, painted tiles of the style often found in the old country houses.  From this hallway (3.25 x 3m) there are double doors that lead back out to the South facing garden, and a door to the second bathroom (3 x 1m) with walk-in shower.  The first of two staircases is also located in this hallway, leading up to the main bedroom.  This huge room (8.5 x 3m) consists of the bedroom area to the left of the stairwell (which is central to the room), of around 3 x 3m, and the dressing room area to the right, which is around 4.5 x 3m.  It would be easy to add partition walls either side of the stairs to create two bedrooms, hence adding a fourth bedroom to the main house, or to create a large ensuite bathroom upstairs.  The  sloping ceiling has beams and the wooden windows with shutters and rustic tiling add to the character of this delightful upstairs space.

There is a second staircase located through double doors from the dining room and leads straight up to the second bedroom (3 x 3m), also with sloping ceiling and beams.  It could be possible to join the whole of the upstairs.  Also accessed from the foot of the stairs is bedroom 3 (3 x 3m) with beamed ceiling.

From the dining area, there is a door leading out to another covered terrace, on the North side, of 8m x 3m which the current owners use for outdoor dining.  This leads to a further east facing seating area with distant views of magnificent mount Maroma.

This typically Andalusian country home, bursting with original character, is perfect for permanent living – perhaps with a little extra income to be made from letting the ‘casita’ and maybe one of the rooms in the main house – or as a holiday home.
