A delightful detached country house, once two adjoining cottages, with plenty of original character, in habitable condition, and scope for further improvement – 7 Kms from Benamargosa

Situated in a small country hamlet of around 10 houses, in a lush river valley planted with avocado, mango and citrus orchards, this delightful detached house has excellent access, with no dirt track, and is set in its own garden plot of 740m2, bordering the quiet country lane.  The house retains all of its original charm and character with original cane and tile roofs, original floor tiles and beams.  The wooden windows are typical of the area too, and many of the internal doors are original double wooden doors.

To the front of the house is a pretty front terrace, stretching along the entire facade, which has two front doors, as this house used to be two houses.  To each side are entrance gates to the garden, and one of these is used as an off street parking area.  The front terrace has grapevines for cover, providing leafy shade in the Summer and plenty of sunshine in the Winter.  From this terrace, one can gaze out over the organic avocado orchards of the neighbour.

The main front door leads into the main living area, with original, rare burgundy and cream chequered floor tiles.  This lovely room (7 x 3.25m) is used as a kitchen, dining room and living area, with a beautiful log burner/cooker at one end, and a rustic style, beautiful kitchen.  To the left hand end of this room, two steps up lead to bedroom 1, (4 x 3.5m) again with original floor tiles in need of a little repair in places, double doors out to the front terrace, and a window to the rear garden.  Beyond is a door to a slightly old fashioned ensuite bathroom, which could be improved or replaced if required (3.5 x 1.25m).

Back in the main room, to the rear, thick walls and double doors lead into a small, cosy living room (4 x 3.5m) with a cupboard set into the thick walls, and doors leading out to the rear terrace (3 x 3m). From  the terrace are steps down to the garden, as due to the lay of the land, the garden is at a lower level.

From the kitchen area, a door in the rear wall leads into what was once a third bedroom and is now used as a very large and useful pantry and store area (4 x 3m) with a window to the garden.  From here, a door opens onto white painted steps, which lead down to the lower ground floor, and into bedroom 2 (4.5 x 3.5m).  This lovely, very cool room, has a door out to the garden, and an ensuite shower room (2 x 2m) plus walk-in wardrobe area (2 x 1m).

Outside, accessed from the garden to the rear, is an additional room, unrenovated, currently used as a useful tool and storage shed.  This room is directly under bedroom 1.  It would be possible to add a spiral staircase to join bedroom 1 upstairs with this room, to make a separate living unit.

The garden has large, mature and very productive lemon trees, a carob tree, and many flowering shrubs and bushes.   As the current owners keep it in a very natural state, it is a riot of flowers in the spring and attracts a vast array of wild birds.  Through the trees and bushes, one can spot the lovely views of the hills and valleys of this lovely country area.

Casa Gallega is an oasis of peace and calm, close to nature and yet within a local, Spanish community of neighbours who go out of their way to be friendly and welcoming. The walks from the property are beautiful, quiet and peaceful, an ideal place to birdwatch along the riverbed.
